How do I hook my surround sound system to a basic DVD player?

Veracious now, I have my surround sound system hooked up to my Xbox 360... but that doesn't play my burned discs... but my really cheap DVD speculator reads them... how do I hook up the surround system to the DVD player, do I need a fancy cord? the Xbox came with the cord and all I had to do was PR it in, this is now getting way too complicated for me to figure out. any suggestions would be appreciated, and if you need me to elaborate.... tell me what you need to be familiar with.
it is a boston digital surround sound set and a panisonic DVD-S1 player.
where do I get these cables, radio shack?

If you are very recently playing burned DVD's, then you can connect RCA cables (red and white) from the output of the DVD player to the input of the receiver.

If you are looking for digital surround sound from movies, you will extremity a digital cable, coax or optical. If the DVD player is cheap, you might just have coax.

Radio Shack or any other electronic set aside will have av cables, you only need 2 connectors, red and white, not 3 (red, white and yellow).

Put together the red and white cables to the red and white of your the Audio out of your DVD player and the other end to the red and white on the dvd in on your receiver.
