Extremely low volume on Sony home stereo - what can I do?

In my bedroom, as a wiry stereo I am currently using a Sony compact stereo. It is about three years old and obviously quite similar to the current model "Sony CMT U 1".

Since a while, the supply is really really low. Even if I turn it up to the max, I am hardly able to hear a thing. From time to time, like once in 5 hours, the perceptive gets as loud as it is supposed to -- which is quite bad, since I am usually having the volume turned to the max since otherwise I hear nothing.

Nothing is illegal with the speakers or the plugs on the back of the stereo, I've checked that.

Now, have you folks any ideas what I can do? Is this a well known problem? Or shall I just carry the stereo to my favourite Sony-merchant to get things sorted out?
