is there any way to repair a squeaking cassette tape?
I have an old 80's rock cassette of the outlander band,a cool band out of tampa,well when you play the tape it will play normally for a bit,then it starts this high planned squealing sound.this tape cannot be replaced,there was one copy on amazon and they wanted over 70.00 for it.It seems to me that epic/columbia had a question with this.back in the day i sent them about 30 tapes that did this,and they replaced them for me free of charge(this was back when cassetes were the main format.).Any sound advice would be greatly appreciated.
Okay, first up, I'd suggest you backup that tape to a more durable medium straight away. Digitize it and store it on a CD or even harddrive somewhere. Tapes are prone to decadence and honestly I think you're pretty lucky your tape survived for like 25 years or something already. Many tapes I had from those days have died already.
Secondly, Im not steadfast if you're talking about a squealing that's coming from the winding mechanism of the tape or if it's a sound that's corrupted during playback.
If the former, I think nice-looking much the only thing you might attempt is to carefully unscrew the tape at the corners and ever so carefully clean, polish and perhaps lightly lubricate the coils of the video. A great risk of doing this is that the tape will get out and all over the place, which obviously would be a nightmare, so take great care when doing that.
If the latter, you can only try to remaster the fillet immediately and hope you can still filter out some or all of the damage that was done, but it's tricky.
At any rate, back it up to a more modern medium asap.
